The last 60 days have focused on what we lovingly call version 1.2 of The Startup Collaborative fellowship program. As with any good product, iterations are required. Ours included.
Some of the modifications we’ve made to the program thus far:
LEVEL 1 // Initiation to LEVEL 4 // Prototype in 30 days. To expedite the time spent pre-validating a concept, we now expect all fellows to complete LEVELS 1 through 4 within one month of joining the fellowship. This helps each founder maintain focus and buys down the risk of entrepreneurs falling in love with a concept instead of a market-validated product.
Retooling of LEVEL 3 // Startup Messaging. Casting a vision, clearly defining value propositions and speaking the customer’s language can be the difference between success and failure. Startup Messaging is an important step in achieving product-market fit. Eventually, the messages developed in this module will inform Outbound Sales scripts, Inbound Marketing content and - if an entrepreneur opts to pursue venture - the fundraising pitch.
Everyone starts at LEVEL 1 // Initiation. As we grandfathered in legacy teams, we assessed each company’s age, stage, previous fundraising and customer traction and then prescribed a starting point within the fellowship. What we found was that - by in large - very critical product-market fit milestones were missed by most teams. Now, we work with each company to fast-track them through early modules intended to define product-market fit.
Coming up for our team:
Two additional investor roadshows -- one in St. Louis and one in Silicon Valley. We’ll be inviting local funds to join us to help improve fund-to-fund relations on behalf of the region.
We’re partnering with University of Nebraska-Omaha to host the first-ever BREAKTHROUGH Weekend, Friday, Sept. 29 through Sunday, Oct. 1. This weekend-long sprint from concept to company will be one of the best ways to catalyze quick growth, identify potential cofounders and connect with the broader ecosystem.
